I can’t tell you how many times, as a principal, I heard parents say, “They should know better!”

Almost every problem came down to two key things: respect and work ethic.Â
It’s the same reason people get fired as adults: they can’t follow through, and they don’t know how to get along with others.
Your tween need to be shown, told, practiced with again and again.
This isn’t just about them respecting you.
It’s about them learning self-respect, responsibility, and how to be part of something bigger than themselves.
You told me what you’re done with:

✔️ “They do not see what needs to be done.”
✔️ “They’re disrespectful and I’m exhausted.”
You’re right — that is exhausting.
But here’s the truth: you can’t just hope they get it. You have to teach it.
And that means communicating expectations clearly, modeling them, and holding the line without losing your mind.
Here’s what I know… because I lived it.
When I took Respect and Work Ethic into my own parenting and made it simple and clear, it changed the entire atmosphere of my family.
Did they instantly just do it? No.
But I held the standard in ways that didn’t cause division.
Did they love it? No.
But can they now step into the world and do their thing? Absolutely.
Was our home calmer? Yes.
Did we grow closer? Yes.
And I was never resentful.
Let me say that again: I was never resentful — because I found my voice while they found theirs.
It was messy.Â
It was amazing.
